Officials investigate 4.5 kilometers of oil sheen off Southern California coast | California

Officials detected a 2.5 mile (4 km) long oil sheen off the southern coast. California. However, it does not appear to be an oil spill, and the cause is currently being investigated.

U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Richard Brahm said authorities spotted the glow about 1.5 miles (2.4 kilometers) off the coast after dawn Friday and then moved about a mile further off the coast. He said there have been no reports of spills or leaks from oil platforms operating offshore, and the sheen does not appear to be increasing, so authorities doubt this is a one-time spill or a common occurrence of oil entering the ocean. He said he suspected that it was due to natural infiltration.

“We don’t know what this is, so we’re doing everything we can to find out what this is,” Brahm said. “As far as we know, it’s not a spill.”

Southern California authorities have formed a unified command to investigate the sheen, which was first reported Thursday night, he said.
