Boston (AP) — Governor of Massachusetts launched National Guard on Monday to help send students to school as districts across the country struggle to hire enough drivers.

Republican Governor Charlie Baker said 250 guards could be used as drivers for school vans.

They will begin training on Tuesday, about 90 of which will be first deployed in four diverse cities in northern Boston, Chelsea, Lawrence, Lowell and Lynn, who have addressed the driver shortage.

According to the Governor’s Office, security guards complete vehicle training just like other school transportation workers, operating a transport van called a “7D vehicle” instead of the familiar long school bus.

It is not clear how long the guards will support the use of the bus or the number of districts the guards will support. But Baker emphasized that bus obligations would not interfere with the ability of security guards to respond to emergencies in other major states.

“The guards have a solid track record of success in supporting civilian authorities,” the governor said in a statement. “Frequent parallel training with state and local first responders makes them suitable for a variety of missions.”

Schools across the United States offer employment bonuses, provide the training needed to obtain a commercial driver’s license, and this year are increasing their hourly wages to attract more drivers.

The shortage of bus drivers challenges the highly contagious delta variant of COVID-19, the controversial disagreement over masking requirements, and the challenge of catching up with the educational scene lost due to the intensified pandemic last year. Complicated the school year already surrounded by.

On the first day of school in Boston last Thursday, school officials reported that more than 1,200 buses ran late and more than 40% did not arrive at school in time for the opening bell.

Still, according to officials, this was the district’s best performance in about six years to bus students to school in time for the first day of school.
