New York (AP) — Prosecutors say Ghislaine Maxwell and the late Jeffrey Epstein were partners in the crime of sexual abuse of teenage girls.
The statement was made on the first day of Maxwell’s sex trafficking trial. On Monday, 12 juries and 6 agents were elected.
In the opening statement, US assistant Lara Pomeranz insisted on the jury that Maxwell recruited and cared for a girl for Epstein’s abuse between 1994 and 2004.
“She reassured them and made them feel safe, all to allow middle-aged men to be sexually abused,” Pomeranz said. NBC News.. “There was a time when she was in the room when that happened.”
Defense lawyer Bobby Sternheim argued that Maxwell had been scapegoated after Epstein committed suicide in prison two years ago.
“Since Eve was accused of seducing Adam with an apple, women have been accused of what men have done,” NBC News said in an opening statement. “She is not Jeffrey Epstein. She is not like Jeffrey Epstein.”
Maxwell once dated Epstein and has been imprisoned in Brooklyn since his arrest last year.
She remains innocent.
British social celebrities face up to 70 years in prison if convicted of all six charges of conspiracy and sexual trafficking.
