NS. Louis (KMOV.com)-St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones will outline a new plan aimed at reducing crime in downtown St. Louis on Tuesday morning.
Business owners and residents in downtown St. Louis hope that the new police chief will help curb the violence that is taking place at their doorsteps.
The announcement comes after several shootings on Washington Avenue, the popular St. Louis strip. Recent gun violence has frustrated residents and business owners as they call on city officials to take further action to increase downtown more safely.
Jones will accompany the leaders of local businesses, communities and citizens at a press conference at 11:30 am.
Kevin Liese owns Jack Patrick’s on the corner of 10th and Olive and said four months ago there was a shootout right next to his restaurant.
“We are involved in knowing that people can avoid things here. The bad thing is that they know they can avoid things and the police can’t do much about it.” He said.
He has owned a bar for 23 years and said the pandemic has hit the business hard, but crime is another big reason why few people go through the door.
Several shootings along the popular St. Louis strip have frustrated residents and business owners and called on city officials to take further action to make downtown safer.
According to new data released last week by Cure Violence St. Louis, the number of gun violence incidents across the city between May and July 2020 decreased compared to May and July 2021. According to the data, there were about 350 cases related to gun violence in July 2020. 175 in July of this year. In addition, there were 45 gun-related murders in July 2020, compared to 19 this July.
The data also show that worsening assaults are declining, with 250 incidents last July, compared to 150 this year.
