Mazda has opted to default all future CX SUVs to all-wheel drive instead of front-wheel drive in order to upgrade the product. However, the announcement was mysteriously hidden in the updated CX-5 marketing material, rather than being allowed to stand on its own.
After the 2022 model, all CX-designated Mazda products will be equipped with i-Activ all-wheel drive at the time of shipment from the factory. For now, this is only relevant to the US market and will definitely be a vehicle with a higher price tag. AWD typically requires shoppers to add an additional $ 1,500 (give or take) to MSRP, and Mazda is unlikely to offer additional parts for free.

That unit is very likely to be installed on some of Mazda’s larger SUVs, leaving an opportunity for rear-wheel drive performance mode.
But is it wise to switch to AWD?
Probably more. Mazda may not have done this if the customer did not select the option on a regular basis. Creating Mazda reduces manufacturing complexity and allows factories to keep track of what they can expect. Despite the need for additional parts, Mazda no longer has to worry about front-wheel drive SUVs and can charge more for the resulting product.
