Tampa, Florida — A green oasis in the middle of a thriving city. Meacham Urban Farm, located between I-275 and downtown Tampa.
Joseph Dalessio is a 2.1 acre owner and administrator.
“We all do organic bio-intensive farming,” Dalessio said.
Dalessio is one of the three farmers on this site.
The farm is just a few blocks from downtown Tampa, and the farm may look like a pop-up to many.
Shalonda Bryon and her family of three recently noticed that they were very close to their home.
“I literally found it because I didn’t know it existed, and I live downtown,” Brian said.
It may seem like it was created overnight, but it’s been three years since it was created.
A partnership between the Tampa Housing Corporation, the HUD, and schools in Hillsborough County has made this possible.
The Hillsboro County School became more involved by providing properties and creating a farm-focused curriculum.
In the coming months, students will have the opportunity to visit Mecham Urban Farm and learn from the land.
Grants from major companies helped fund the project.
Urban Farm is the first in Tampa.
“It’s like the lifestyle we’re trying to promote. It’s the whole package,” Dalessio said.
The goal is to offer options in food desert areas, but it’s already doing more.
It gives younger generations, like Brian’s 18-month-old girl, an idea of what they can do.
“I think it’s amazing she can see this. I realized she wasn’t an urban girl. She’s very interested in farms and the countryside and very important for children in the future. I think it is, “Brian said.
The farm offers membership programs and deals not available at regular grocery stores.
“We accept EBT and then have a SNAP benefit program, so if they spend $ 20 using EBT, they can actually get the value of $ 40 on our farm. “I will,” said Dalessio.
The science behind agriculture pays close attention, but the final game is simple.
“That’s our goal to feed people. That’s it,” said Dalessio.
