Linda P. Villarreal vowed to take up a large seat on the board of directors of the University of Delmar at a special meeting on Friday.
With over 40 years of educational experience in Kingsville, Brooks County and Driscol ISD, Villarreal fills the rest of Hector’Coach’Sarinas’ term until 2024.
Salinas died on April 30 after fighting multiple illnesses. He was 76 years old.
Second Vice-Chair Susan Hutchinson, after hearing the views of all three candidates, urged Villarreal to be vacant. The first vice-chairman, Nick Adam, supported the motion and unanimously approved the rest of the regent.
Real estate investor and developer John C. Tameze and Salinas’ son Orlando also applied to fill their seats.
President Carroll Scott said all applicants have shown compassion for the University of Delmar, but look forward to working with Villarreal.
Villarreal said he was honored to not only serve as regent but also fill Salinas’ seat.
“He had such power in the education world and changed the lives of so many children,” Villarreal said. “I hope he can continue his efforts to give all children the opportunity to be educated and earn a degree and qualification.”
