Member of first all-Black officiating crew has ties to DC area – Washington, District of Columbia

When Rams plays the Buccaneers on Monday night, the NFL will welcome the all-black official crew for the first time in league history-and one of the crew members lives in the DC area.

The NFL will welcome the all-black official crew for the first time in league history when the Rams play the Buccaneers on Monday night.

The crew includes referee Jerome Boger, referee Barry Anderson, down judge Julian Maps, line judge Carl Johnson, side judge Dale Shaw, field judge Anthony Jeffreys, and back judge Greg Steed. Consists of.

Steed is a graduate of Howard University and lives in the DC area. He was responsible for several Super Bowls, including the February 2020 Super Bowl LIV.

In favor of NFL, Steed shared his idea that it was part of a historic game with WTOP.

Five members of the crew work together on a regular basis. Johnson and Steed join the group in this game. The crew has spent a total of 89 seasons in the league and has worked in six Super Bowls.

“I’m proud of my legacy and excited to participate in this historic game,” Boger said. “I’m really looking forward to the opportunity to work with a great group of black staff and show their proficiency in carrying out our mission.”

The league has assigned crew members based on geography this season to limit travel by the coronavirus pandemic. Crew assignment guidelines have also been relaxed to assign officers to games closer to home when possible.

The first black officer in a major sport was Bartle Torah, who was hired by the NFL in 1965.
