Memorial Day ceremonies honor veterans – Honolulu, Hawaii

Honolulu (KHON2) —Governor David Ige hosted the annual Memorial Day Cemetery in Kaneohe on Monday, May 30th at the Hawaii State Veterans’ Cemetery at Memorial Plaza.

Honoring their service and sacrifice is the theme of this year.

“We mourn the deaths of all the men and women who gave their lives to protect our rights, but today is also a day of gratitude,” said Governor Ige. “It’s a day to thank for the freedom we have and the reasons we have.”

The ceremony included the 111th Military Band of the Hawaii Army National Guard, a flag parade, a salute of rifles by honorary guards of the Hawaii Army National Guard, and a faucet performance.
This year was the first completely direct ceremony after a two-year small ceremony by the coronavirus pandemic.

Lieutenant Governor of the State has joined Ige. Brig. General Stephen Logan, military leaders, parliamentary delegations, veterans and their families.

Matthew Quinn, Deputy Secretary of State for the Veterans Affairs Department, was the keynote speaker.

At Schofield Barracks, the US Army Garrison Hawaii hosted a memorial ceremony for the war dead. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War.

The guest speaker at the ceremony was Colonel Dan Missigoi, commander of the US Army Garrison Hawaii.

He honored the US Army Sergeant, who received the Medal of Honor. Kailua-Kona’s first class Henry Yano.

Yano died on his second tour in Vietnam in 1969. The Navy’s freighter, Fort’s Air Building, to honor three things named after him. Rucker Alabama, and Schofield Barracks libraries.
