Lexington, Kentucky (LEX 18) —When travelers go to Blue Grass Airport to begin their Memorial Day weekend, airport officials say they are still seeing a slight decline in tourist numbers in 2022. ..

According to a recent AAA survey, at least 563,000 Kentucky citizens are expected to travel at least 50 miles this weekend.

“It’s a Memorial Day weekend, so I’m really surprised that there aren’t that many people here,” said airport traveler Grace Rahman.

Airport officials report that Memorial Day weekends are one of the busiest travel times of the year, but traffic has dropped by about 15% since 2021.

They say this is partly due to the low availability of aircraft as airlines continue to fight staff shortages.

However, despite rising gas prices, road travel is expected to skyrocket during the informal beginning of summer.

“In contrast to last year, it will rise by about 8%,” said Lori Weaver Hawkins of AAA Bluegrass. “In fact, we see about 39 million people nationwide.”
