Spartanburg, South Carolina (WSPA)-The day after the funeral of the victim, a monument to the deadly crash site was destroyed.
18-year-old Daniel Smith died in a car accident three weeks ago.
The crash occurred on Luis Chapel Road around 3:50 am on June 25th.
As Smith was driving east on Lewis Chapel Road, he ran off the left side of the road and hit a tree.
He was found dead on the scene.
His father, Brian Piper, says the news crushed him.
“Me and Daniel, we had a good relationship. Last year, a year and a half, we really got closer,” Piper said.
After his death, friends and family built a monument in honor of Smith.
“It was good. It was beautiful. There were flowers and a cross,” Piper said.
But the day after Smith rested, it was discovered in pieces.
“The day after his funeral, I got a call that someone destroyed it,” Piper said.
The cross is gone and the words on the tree are marked.
Piper says someone doesn’t understand how to do this.
“When we came and saw it the other day, it was just anger. I’m not sad, I’m just angry. Someone came and did something sacred to our family. I don’t know what the process of thinking of blasphemy will be, “said Piper.
The story doesn’t end here, he says.
He is planning the next monument to honor his son.
“The following are made of some kind of metal. They get deeper and bigger. If they want to ruin it, they’ll have to work for it,” Piper says. It was.
Smith’s family also asks law enforcement agencies to contact if they have information about who destroyed the monument.
