Menkhaven Fire in Conejos County prompts evacuations – Colorado Springs, Colorado

Conejos County, Colorado — A wildfire called Menkhaven Fire burning in Conejos County burned 154 acres as of Saturday night.

The fire is about 7 miles northwest of Fox Creek and surrounds Road 101. Fires continue to spread to the Rajarak Creek area.

The community north of Highway 17 from Fox Creek to Holka has evacuated to Parrish Hall in Antonito, Colorado. The Red Cross seeks help from the shelter.

Rio Grande National Forest firefighters assist local volunteer firefighters with multiple hot shot crews. Several tankers are also dropping water on this wildfire.

Authorities are investigating power lines that have gone down as an ignition point.

In southern Conejos County, especially along the Conejos River and in the Fox Creek area, heavy smoke from the Menkaben fire can occur all night long.
