Menopause can make the workplace more difficult for women

Wednesday, December 2, 2020 (HealthDay News)-Menopausal symptoms can interfere with women’s work, Japanese researchers report.

For the survey, investigators examined nearly 600 working women aged 45 to 65 in Japan. Of them, 61% were postmenopausal.

Women with a high number of menopausal symptoms performed poorly at work, according to the authors of a recently published study online. menopause, Journal of the North American Menopause Society (NAMS).

However, researchers found that working less stressful and maintaining a healthy lifestyle helped reduce menopausal symptoms in women. They also say that women with many symptoms of menopause are more likely to be inactive and have chronic health and work-related stress.

According to Keiko Hashimoto and colleagues at Tohoku University, the findings provide insights on how postmenopausal women can stay productive in the workplace.

For example, employers can improve the working conditions of hot women by lowering the room temperature, adjusting the dress code and wearing lightweight, short-sleeved clothing.

Another idea is for employers to offer stress management classes that benefit all employees, including women who are suffering from mood changes due to fluctuations in estrogen levels.

The authors of the study noted that employers are unlikely to make such workplace changes because women are often reluctant to discuss menopausal symptoms with their bosses.

“This study emphasizes the association between the burden of menopausal symptoms and poor work performance. In particular, women in this study, who have many menopausal symptoms, are caregivers and are prone to chronic illness. “We did,” said Dr. Stephanie Faubion, director of medical care at NAMS. ..
