Merced County, CA (KFSN)-The Merced County Supervisory Board has resolved to proceed with plans for a renewed prison facility.

This project will create a maximum security extension of 256 beds at the John Ratraca Orthodontic Center.

It will essentially replace the dilapidated main prison in downtown Merced.

On Tuesday, the board unanimously approved a $ 1.35 million contract with a Sacramento company to manage the project.

Sheriff Vern Warnke said the situation in both prisons in the county had influenced a series of recent escapes.
