East Point, Georgia (CBS46)-Crime-filled Metro Atlanta apartments will now accommodate public security workers.

The partnership between the city and Brookfield Apartments will allow qualified East Point police and firefighters to live in apartments free of charge, according to East Point City officials.

Eight one-bedroom units at the Washington Road Complex are reserved for public security workers. Police and firefighters are allowed to stay in the unit for up to 3 years. They receive similarly funded utilities.

“We are grateful for the positive partnership between East Point and Brookfield Apartments to actively build a safer community,” said Mayor Deana Holiday Ingraham. “Public security remains our number one priority at East Point and this project demonstrates our commitment.”

The dwellings were once recognized as one of the worst dwellings in the city. A city spokesperson said a court order was issued requiring police to be present in the area 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, due to the prevalence of crime and other illegal activities. However, since the court’s order, apartment staff and the city have partnered to perform a complete rehab in one of the buildings to house a home for public security staff.

The effort was led by East Point city council member Sharon Shropshire and mayor Frederick Gardiner, according to a city spokesman.

“Our public security authorities are working very hard to protect and serve our inhabitants. This shows our appreciation for their service and dedication to our city. Is one way you can, “said Sharon Shropshire of East Point City Council Ward A At Large.

Frederick Gardiner, East Point City Manager, said: “Injecting private sector into local police is a great way to start more neighborhood initiatives right away.”

The complex and city authorities will host an invitation-only grand opening to showcase the new era of the complex.

“The city of East Point is excited about this new era of community-law enforcement partnerships. Thanks to this partnership, what was once a devastated community is now back in legitimate glory. Solicitor offices are serious about protecting the people of East Point. This is the first step for many. “
