Boston, Massachusetts 2021-09-27 17:05:07 –
After continuing to fight for the playoffs until the final week of the 2019 season and the final weekend of the 2020 season, New York Mets set a bigger goal for 2021, especially after spending most of the first four months in the National League East. I had it in mind.
Instead, Mets spends the last week of the season already excluded from post-season conflicts, and even the smallest of concrete goals is out of reach to finish .500.
Mets will open its final homestand on Tuesday afternoon, hosting Miami Marlins with a double header. Right-handed Marcus Straumann (9-13, 3.00 ERA) and Trevor Williams (4-2, 4.39 ERA) will take the New York mound.
Marlins is expected to compete with the left-handed Trevor Rogers (7-8, 2.67 ERA) in the opener. Miami has not yet announced a nightcap starter.
The double header was required by the rainout at Cityfield on September 1st.
Both teams were turned off on Monday after being attacked by clinched enemies at the expense of the Division Championship over the weekend. Mets lost to National League Central Champion Milwaukee Brewers 8-4 on Sunday, and Marlins lost to AL East winner Tampa Bay Rays 3-2.
Sunday’s victory closed the Brewers division, celebrating a blizzard falling from the rooftops of the American Family Field, watching over the dugouts most Met visited.
Mets (73-82) thought he would enjoy at least one clinch celebration when he spent 114 days in first place in eastern NL, including the stretch from May 8th to August 6th. The five games following play on July 31 have been 17-34 since then, leading to the fourth worst record in baseball.
Skid lost 10 of the last 11 times this month and is only intensifying for Mets, who was officially excluded from playoff competition on Saturday afternoon.
“I didn’t play enough baseball in the second half,” Mets manager Luis Rojas said on Saturday night. “That led to this.”
For Marlins (64-91), this season’s struggle was not a rational goal. Marlins (64-91) did not spend more than .500 days and took part in the half-game on Tuesday ahead of Washington Nationals, the last place in eastern NL.
But seeing Florida rivals conclude AL East with a 7-3 victory on Saturday gave Marlin a glimpse of the type of lasting success he wanted to achieve in the end.
“Obviously, they have a secret source that you have to interrupt,” said Kim Ng, general manager of Marlins. “They aren’t moments, year-round, and I think that’s what everyone is trying to reach.”
Straumann lost when he gave up four runs in five innings as Mets fell to Boston Red Socks 6-3 at the most recent start on September 21st. He has three career starts against Marlins and is 0-0 at 2.13 ERA.
Williams hasn’t pitched since last Wednesday when Mets abandoned 6 runs (4 wins) in a 4-inning bailout after losing to Red Socks 12-5. He made his latest start on September 6th and did not consider the decision after allowing two runs in five innings with a 4-3 defeat to the Mets Nationals.
Williams is 0-1 with 4.80 in 4 games (3 starts) against Miami.
Rogers, who lost 7-1 to the Nationals, was the last to throw on September 21, and was alleged to have lost 4 runs (1 win) in 5 1/3 innings, scoring 1.20 ERA 2-0. Three careers begin for Mets.
