Mexico seizes ‘historic’ half-ton of fentanyl at warehouse – Tucson, Arizona

Mexico City (AP) — Mexican troops and national guards announced on Thursday what they call a “historical” seizure of more than 0.5 tonnes of fentanyl in a warehouse in a city in the northern part of Culiacan.

“This is the biggest seizure in the history of this deadly drug,” said Assistant Public Security Secretary Ricardo Messia, estimating that fentanyl had an illegal value of about $ 230 million. rice field.

Synthetic opioids such as fentanyl are behind a significant increase in deaths from overdose in the United States. Only 2 milligrams of fentanyl can be fatal. The drug is 100 times more powerful than morphine.

Approximately 1,200 pounds (543 kilograms) found in the warehouse could have produced millions of counterfeit tablets for which fentanyl is normally offered. Fentanyl is extremely deadly because it can be pushed into tablets made like Xanax, Adderall, and Oxycodone, or mixed with other medicines.

This has led to the death of tens of thousands of people in the United States from overdose, as people are often unaware that they are taking fentanyl.

However, the purity of the quantity found in the warehouse was unknown. Fentanyl is often cleaved with other substances before being squeezed into tablets. Almost all fentanyl smuggled into the United States comes from Mexico and is produced from precursor chemicals smuggled from China.

According to the Mexican Department of Defense, the warehouse is located in Culiacan, the capital of Sinaloa, with a drug cartel of the same name, and 10 men were arrested.

Soldiers also discovered 0.5 tonnes of methamphetamine, cocaine, opium, and at least 70 tonnes of precursor chemicals in the July 2 raid.
