Surfside, Florida (AP) —Early Thursday morning in a surfside town in the Miami area, a sea-view side of a beachfront condo tower collapses, trapping residents in rubble and twisted metal, and a cloud of debris throughout the neighborhood. I sent that.
Dozens of rescue teams rushed to a partially collapsed building and firefighters were seen pulling survivors from concrete shards.
Santomezil, 50, told the Miami Herald that his wife called him from a building where he was working as an aide to an elderly woman.
“She said she heard a big explosion. It felt like an earthquake,” Ozil told the newspaper. He later called him and said the rescuer was defeating her.
Authorities have not yet announced any details about the casualties or the number of people who lived in the building.
Miami Dade Fire Rescue is conducting search and rescue operations, with more than 80 vehicles “on site with the help of the city’s fire department” in a tweet.
“We are still very active because we are in the field,” Sgt said. Marian Cruz of the Surfside Police Station. “I can say that the building has 12 floors. The entire backside of the building has collapsed.”
Victor Cohen, who lives nearby, told television station WPLG that the building had undergone a major renovation when the Oceanfront Wing “collapsed like a pancake.”
A team of firefighters walked through the rubble, picking up the survivors and carrying them from the wreckage.
The collapse left many units exposed in the still standing parts of the building. Television footage showed that bunk beds, tables, and chairs remained in the damaged apartment. The air conditioner unit was hanging from a part of the building, but the wire was hanging.
Police blocked nearby roads and dozens of fire trucks, ambulances, ambulances, and police cars flocked to the area.
Debris from the collapse coated the car up to 2 blocks away with a thin layer of dust.
Photos and videos from the scene show that the collapse affected half of the tower. A pile of rubble and debris surrounded the area just outside the building. The department has not yet said what may have caused the collapse.
The development of the Seaview Condominium was built in 1981 on a beach on the southeastern corner of the surfside. There are several two-bedroom units currently on the market, with asking prices ranging from $ 600,000 to $ 700,000.
The area is a mix of old and new apartments, homes, condominiums and hotels, with restaurants and shops serving an international combination of residents and tourists. The community offers a slow-paced neighborhood atmosphere, in contrast to the hustle and bustle of South Beach.
