San Antonio (AP) — Texas officials say two more migrants have died from the tragedy of the San Antonio trailer, increasing the number of deaths to 53.
Mexican officials say most of the immigrants found dead after being abandoned in trucks in the heat of Texas came from Mexico.
The director of the National Institute of Immigration in Mexico said Wednesday that 27 of the victims came from Mexico, 14 from Honduras, 7 from Guatemala and 2 from El Salvador.
Efforts to identify the dead are complicated by the lack of identification, the need to share fingerprint data across borders, and even stolen IDs.
President Joe Biden said the first report suggests that the tragedy was caused by smugglers and traffickers.
“Our prayers are with those who have lost their lives, their loved ones, and those who are still fighting for their lives,” Biden said.
Biden added that the Department of Homeland Security is leading the investigation.
