Mike Kemp Named Interim Athletic Director | News – Omaha, Nebraska

Mike Kemp, Senior Associate Athletic Director of Events and Facilities within UNOAthletics, has been appointed Interim Athletic Director.

Kemp will take on the role on Monday, July 19th, as Tref Alberts will leave UNO and become the next director of athletics at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

“I am grateful that Mike Kemp was willing to agree to be the interim athletic director,” said Dr. Joan Lee of CFA. “I have the utmost confidence in his ability, experience, knowledge and personality to effectively lead this division.”

Ted Carter, President of the University of Nebraska Systems, praised this choice.

“Mike Kemp is a veteran coach and manager who has dedicated the last 25 years of his life to UNO and our student athletes,” Carter said. “I know Mike will lead Omaha Athletics in good faith and will make a decision during this transition.”

Kemp thanked Albert for his many years of service to Oakland Athletics, looked back on the path that led him to this opportunity, and expressed his excitement for the future.

“This is a bittersweet time for me,” Kemp said. “Tref Alberts has been a trusted friend and a great colleague for over 12 years. Together we have had many challenging and thrilling experiences. Kemp has been with UNO since he was first hired as the university’s first head hockey coach in 1996. He was then promoted to Associate Athletic Director in 2009 and Senior Associate Athletic Director – Events / Facilities in 2019. In this position, Kemp oversees the hockey program and is General Manager of the Baxter Arena.

“Mike Kemp has been a trusted colleague since the day I set foot on the UNO campus. He is a valuable leader in both athletics and government and a beloved member of the Omaha community,” said Tref Alberts. Said. “Omaha Athletics is in good hands.”

Kemp was awarded the 2021 NCHC Commissioner Award in April for his contributions to the conference and NCAA Men’s Hockey during the difficult times of the 2020-21 season. He was the first person to win the NCHC Commissioner Award. This award is given to individuals who have achieved outstanding achievements that have significantly strengthened NCHC or its affiliates during the year through dedicated efforts and services.

During his tenure at Kemp, who directs the Maverick Hockey Program, the team became a national leader in attending college hockey. This is a tradition that continues today. Kemp coached five Americans while in Omaha and had a total of 12 CCHA players over the ten years he coached in the league. During his coaching career, he served on the board of directors of the American Hockey Coach Association and was Second Vice President from 2000 to 2003. He was a member of the board of directors of the Nebraska Special Olympics from 2002 to 2003. From 2014, 2015 to 2018, he was a board member of the Nebraska Sports Council.

Kemp is currently a board member of the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame and chairs the NCAA Division I Men’s Ice Hockey Committee, which consists of six members.

In 2009, Kemp was inducted into the Omaha Hockey Hall of Fame. He was also inducted into the Omaha Sports Hall of Fame in 2013.
