Nashville, Tennessee (WTVF) — 17 people Governor Bill Lee gave execution amnesty on Thursday It was Mindy Dodd.

A jury sentenced Dodd to imprisonment 20 years ago for plotting to kill her stepfather, her husband Henry Dodd. The jury came to that conclusion, even though Henry’s nephew shot him.

“She was at work when someone else killed her stepfather’s husband, and since then she has claimed her innocence,” said a group who worked to secure Dodd’s amnesty, Heather Meschel said in a project of love and justice.

According to supporters, Henry Dodd raped Mindy at the age of eight, divorced his mother, and married Mindy when he became pregnant at the age of 18.

On Thursday, Lee commuted Mindy Dodd’s sentence — reduced life imprisonment and immediately qualified her for parole. This is what the state parole committee has already recommended to Dodd.

“We were able to collectively raise awareness of her case and draw the attention of lawmakers,” said Mr. Meschel.

Issuing a large number of amnesty and other amnesty actions is not something the governor normally does in the middle of his term.

This is a decision that the former governor has also worked on and usually waits until they resign to do it.

Former Governor Bill Haslam said waiting until then was a decision he later regretted because of the complexity of each case of amnesty.Write in his 2021 book Faithful existence:

“I thought it would be better to delay all these decisions to the end and deal with them all at the same time,” Haslam wrote. “Looking back, this was a bad decision. It’s really bad.”

The Parole Commission must make a final decision to grant parole before Mindy Dodd is released.
