Jefferson City, Missouri (KMOV.com)-Missouri suffered more deaths in 2020 than it was born. This is the natural decline in population during the year for the first time in more than a century.

by Report published by the Health and Senior Services DepartmentIn Missouri, 73,831 people died in 2020, more than 11,000 more than in 2019. The state has 59,276 births, more dead than 4,555 were born.

According to the report, “Missouri is the first to spontaneously decline for a year in 110 years of centralized data collection of important records.”

December was particularly bad for the dead, as the COVID-19 pandemic caused the most damage. 8,215 people died that month. This is nearly 3,000 more than in December 2019. Nearly 2,000 of these deaths were related to COVID-19.
