Council Bluffs, Iowa. (KMTV) — The Pottawattamie Promise is a scholarship that helps students earn an associate degree from Iowa Western Community College. The students thought they were set up until the email changed their course of action.

For many Council Bluffs Metro students, the Potawa Tammy Promise is a ticket to a better life.

“My parents didn’t go to college because I’m a first-generation college student. I’m the first kid in my family to go to college,” said Jessica Castro, who received the scholarship.

Kenya Paramo said that scholarships mean everything.

“It will take much more time than my parents, they will have to work How to In addition, I feel that I need a full-time job to maintain and stay in Iowa Western for two years, “says Paramo.

Scholarships are worth over $ 8,000 per student per year and cover tuition and book payments. However, the students were told that the home would almost certainly be covered.

“They told us it wasn’t part of the scholarship, they made it sound very easy,” Paramo said.

This week, students received an email stating that housing is not part of the program, except in very limited circumstances. As a result, their request to live on campus is denied. It took the student off the course.

Scholarship recipient Laura Tag said, “This is a new and new start, and it helped because many of the homes we come out of are distracted or have few siblings. Let’s do it. ”

Castro said he was worried about commuting to class.

“I was a little angry because my car was stolen recently, so it was before I was rejected. If I was told that it was approved, I could go to class alive. On campus. I don’t have enough money to buy a new car right now. ”

After a difficult year, the next student said he needed to pivot again.

“I felt like I had nothing to worry about because I was told I had nothing to worry about, and now we are all a kind of worry,” Tag said.

3 News Now has contacted Iowa Western with the following statement:

“Hello. The Potawa Tammy Promise Program is an important scholarship program that helps local students fully fund their tuition and book payments as they earn an associate degree in Iowa Western. The program is funded by the generous funding of the Iowa West Foundation.

This year is a tough year for students, and misunderstandings about housing are unfortunate. Housing is no longer part of the Potawatammy Promise Scholarship. The decision was made to extend the opportunity to more students. With the generous support of the Western Iowa Foundation, more than 700 students from high schools in six regions have been awarded scholarships since 2015. It covers 100% of tuition, fees and books and is worth over $ 8,000 per student per year. ..
