Austin, Texas (AP) —The Texas Supreme Court allows the state to investigate parents of young people with gender identity disorder for child abuse.
However, in a mixed decision on Friday, the court also handed over victory to one of the first families the child welfare authorities contacted, following the order of Republican Governor Greg Abbott.
Lambada Legal, who helped file a proceeding against Texas on behalf of the 16-year-old girl’s parents, called the decision a victory because she put aside an investigation into the state’s family.
In February, Abbott issued its first order to instruct child welfare authorities to investigate reports of gender-verifying care for children as abusive. The court stated that the order was “non-binding.”
However, state child welfare officials have stated that parents of transgender children can be investigated, but they must use the same discretion they used before the governor’s order.
