Columbia, South Carolina (WSPA) —State health officials say more than 16,000 COVID-19 patients in South Carolina were treated with monoclonal antibodies.

According to doctors, the antibody works by blocking the effects of the COVID-19 virus in patients who are already infected.

Dr. Kelly said: “Monclonal antibodies boost your natural immunity, but they are only temporary. They last about three months.”

She also stated that treatment should be given within 10 days of showing symptoms or having a positive COVID-19 test.

Dr. Kelly said that people over the age of 12 are eligible for treatment as long as they weigh 88 pounds or more.

According to DHEC, patients with COVID-19 are not eligible for treatment if they are hospitalized to aid normal breathing, are currently hospitalized, or are receiving oxygen.

Dr. Kelly states that this treatment is not a replacement for COVID-19 vaccination.

She said. “Vaccines are our way out of the pandemic. Vaccination is a much better approach to preventing serious illnesses that can lead to hospitalization and death.”
