KANSAS CITY, Missouri — The Wyandotte County Sheriff told the Wyandotte County, Kansas and Kansas City Commission on Thursday night that his department needs more help.
Mayor Tyrone Garner called for a special session so commissioners could hear a presentation from Sheriff Daniel Soptic and a presentation on the 2023 budget.
Soptic told the commissioner that his department needed 30 more deputies.
The lack of well-trained legal officers makes it less safe for those already on the job, he said.
“Whether it’s delivering newspapers or working in prison, this job is dangerous every day,” Spotik said.
He also pointed out that working in a detention center isn’t so dangerous, it’s a different kind of danger.
A big reason why this department is so understaffed is how much you pay your employees.
Sheriffs have praised benefit packages for employees, but he said it always comes back to money and residency requirements.
Garner said he understands the sheriff’s problem, noting that sheriffs patrol and investigate crime in county parks.
