Lihue, Hawaii (KHON2) — There are a total of 55 known active COVID-19 cases on Kauai. County officials said this was a concern for counties with a population of over 70,000.
After months of reporting few or no new cases of COVID-19 daily, the virus is now spreading to the Garden Isle.

Mayor Derek Kawakami said the case was related to the expansion of the community, including at least four groundbreaking cases.
“Four fully vaccinated individuals were positive,” Kawakami said. “Two of those cases were completely asymptomatic. I just went to the test for some reason.”
The other two show mild symptoms.
About 50% of the county’s population is already fully vaccinated, giving the mayor some confidence despite the increasing number of cases.
“We are committed to delivering as many vaccines as possible,” Kawakami said. “We have vaccinated most of the community in the elderly and many in underlying health. As a result, we have not yet seen hospitalization.”
However, there is room for improvement in other areas.
According to state data, Kauai is the last to be ranked by mask usage and is on a downward trend.
The last time we saw state volunteers wearing the mark in Garden Isle was April 4, with 73% of people covering their faces.
“Our mask compliance is a concern. We are the lowest in the state, and I think it’s a reaction to the fact that Kauai was very safe during these months,” Kawakami said. I will. ”
He said more restrictions might be needed, but discussions are still underway.
The county will offer a free COVID-19 test on a first-come, first-served basis at the Kauai War Memorial Convention Hall on Saturday from 8 am to 3:30 pm, with 350 tests per day.
Due to high demand from restaurants interested in undergoing the COVID-19 test, the county opened a test site on Saturday.
