KOIN, Oregon — The mother is still wondering what happened the night her son was shot dead by Tigard police in January.

Jacob McDuff was fatally shot by police on January 6 after police said it was a call for domestic violence. However, according to both his mothers, McDuff was experiencing a mental health crisis.

Police were called to Edgewood Manor Apartments near SW Hall Boulevard and SW Bonita Road around 4 pm that day, officials said. Police tried to arrest a 26-year-old boy sitting in a car, but he refused to be detained. Officials said McDuff was armed with a knife.

The car he was in was registered with his mother, so police called her in the midst of the situation and asked for permission to break the window. His mother, Dr. Maria McDuff, reportedly gave them permission, but said the event was related to mental health and asked them to be “son-friendly.”

Soon she learned that a policeman had shot and killed her in the fight to arrest her son.

A few months later, Dr. McDuff has not yet received additional information from the Tigard Police Department or the Washington County District Attorney’s Office, according to lawyers. The only information provided to the family is that of the death certificate. It includes “murder,” which stands for “method of death,” “multiple gunshot wounds,” as “immediate cause of death,” and “police shooting.” During the conflict. “

Family lawyer Scott Levin filed a tort claim notice with the City of Tigard and the Tigard Police Station on April 13 for further information.

“What steps did they take to overcome the situation?” Levin asked. “What protocol did they follow to get to the point where they thought they needed to shoot a sick young man? These are some of the things we want to know.”

This is a developing story.
