Tulsa, Oklahoma — Some local Tulsa moms are stepping up to help those in need of food for their babies.

Many local moms with a desire to help others during this national shortage of infant formula use Facebook to provide their milk.

“We want to help where you can make sure your mother and baby aren’t crying,” said Brianna Kiroz, a breastfeeding donor.

Briana Quiroz has two toddlers. He was in the NICU when her son was born, but due to winter snow and COVID she was always there and couldn’t feed him.

At that time, donor milk helped feed her baby. Now she wants to give it back.

“I’ve seen moms who are generally worried. She said she’s down to the last two bottles. After seeing that, I’m going to do something.”

She says others have offered to buy breast pumps, supplements and bags.

Ascension St. John’s pediatrician says it’s great to see the mother step up for help, but the family needs to be careful.

“They should have talked to this parent and had a relationship with them about their health and medical history, and their knowledge of the medicines they might be taking,” said St. John’s pediatrician Courtney Sole’s. The doctor said.

Dr. Sales also urges parents not to buy milk from anyone other than the milk bank for rigorous screening of milk.

“The safest way to get milk is through a milk bank, but it’s not practical for anyone, economically, or readily available,” Dr. Sales said. You take on yourself. “

She also wants her to know that if she can’t provide more than her child, she shouldn’t feel obliged to help or sin.

Quiroz says that if you can’t donate milk, you should consider sharing the prescriptions you find in the store.

“All you need is a photo and a post, and someone there will get it,” Quiroz said.

Dr. Sales says that women who want to help by providing breast milk CDC requirements for proper preparation and storage.
