(NEXSTAR) – On June 16th, Rian Kanouff set out to raise awareness of the issues he feels very passionate about. And he repeated it by taking off his birthday suit and jumping off the plane, hoping to set a new world record.
“The idea of breaking this record came from wanting to really find something that society believes is so overlooked: a way to bring awareness about mental health and suicide prevention.” Said Canuf, an avid skydiver and motivational speaker who has completed nearly 600 people. Diving for the last 4 years.
Kanouf, from Omaha, Nebraska, said he was urged to try a record-breaking skydive after losing both his friends and family to suicide in the last 14 months.
“I lost my grandfather, my best friend, and a few more people in my immediate life,” he said. “Mental health is important. It’s important to socially normalize what you say when you’re not okay. It’s important to let everyone know that there is someone who can speak. But for some reason It’s not that easy to get everyone to hear. “
To send the message, Canuf arranged to confront his own vulnerabilities by attempting to record most naked skydive — but the idea didn’t come out of nowhere. Nude skydiving is often booked by people in the skydiving community for 100 people, he says.th Jump — Achievement close to achievement before one of his friends killed himself.
In the process, Canuf also sought to raise money for Movember, Mental health, suicide prevention, prostate cancer, testicular cancer-focused charity.
“Men don’t like being defenseless. It’s not a secret to anyone who knows a man,” Kanuf laughed. “It takes courage to be defenseless at first, but after pushing out the first courage … things get easier and easier.”
According to Canuf, there has been no record of nude skydiving so far. However, officials of the Association for the Advancement of Naked Skydiving (SANS) set a threshold of 25 before considering him a record holder.
To that end, Canuf was tied to a parachute and prepared to jump off the plane early in the morning of June 16. There were no clothes other than socks, sneakers and sunglasses. And he did it over and over again until he set the SANS world record on his 25th jump.
But then he kept jumping. And jump. And jump. By the end of the day, he had achieved a total of 60 naked skydive.
“When my parachute swelled with jump number 60, I looked at the sky and the scenery, thought about my friends who weren’t there, why I was … I was a little emotional,” he said.
Canoef and SANS are currently waiting for contact from Guinness World Records about Canoef’s inclusion in the record book. But in the meantime, he GoFundMe account To help pay for his skydiving costs. He says everything that remains goes straight to Movember.
“I was overjoyed … I achieved what I was trying to do, fundraising, and the seeds of planted consciousness. It feels really great,” he said.
