Joplin, Mon. — Three people have died and numerous injuries have been reported since Amtrak train derails Along the Montana High Line in Liberty County on Saturday.

Amtrak confirmed the derailment near Joplin and issued the following statement:

MT around 4 pm, Empire Builder Train 7/27 derailed near Joplin, Montana. Approximately 146 passengers and 16 crew members have been reported injured. If you have any questions about friends or family on this train, please call 800-523-9101. Amtrak works with local governments to transport injured passengers and safely evacuate all other passengers.

Photos shared on social media show that at least one car is completely sideways and several others are upright or overturned but off track.

Witnesses said they helped passengers get out of the derailed car. Jeremiah Johnson told KRTV that the ladder was being used to free people and some had to be released.

“I had to lift a few with a lot of volunteers and then cut out some. There was a woman behind me, my legs were stuck and I couldn’t remove it without a saw.” Johnson said. ..

Johnson explained that he had seen shoulder, head and neck injuries. He added that his wife helped the passengers get off the train.

“Now she was helping out on the scene and checking the vitals of the upcoming people. I took her to the hospital. They gave me a lot of help there so we went to high school. Going on, she began to help her get off. Documentation of people’s injuries, names, and medications they might be taking. “

As a result of the derailment, Empire Builders depart on Saturday, July 27th and August 28th. September 25th will be canceled between Minot, North Dakota (MOT) and Shelby, Montana (SBY).Also, September 26th (Sun) westbound Empire Builder Train 7 ends in Minneapolis, Minnesota (MSP) and heads east Empire Builder Train 8 departs in Minneapolis, Minnesota (MSP). There is no alternative mode of transportation. Amtrak customers should contact 800-872-7245 for additional information regarding service status.

According to CBS News, the National Transportation Safety Board has sent 14 investigators to the site.

Amtrak’s passenger line, which runs along the Montana High Line, is known as the Empire Builder. It runs between Chicago and Seattle / Portland.
