KOIN, Oregon — An 80-year-old mushroom hunter, missing for nearly two days, successfully reunited with his family after being discovered by a passerby near Lake Trillium.

Steven Souvannaraj helped another person lost from the woods, but followed his steps after saying he had lost his car key. Officials said it was then that he got lost.

One Tuesday, Souvannaraj was reported missing after going out for mushroom hunting in the Mt. Hood National Forest on Monday morning.

CCSO Search & Rescue Coordinators set out to search for Souvannaraj in the Trillium Lake area. Several search and rescue teams in the area assisted with the help of Souvannaraj’s family, who provided scent articles for use by the K9 team.

His family found his van near Schellerburn Road late Tuesday afternoon.

The search team searched late at night and returned Wednesday morning. A total of four teams were looking for Souvannaraj that morning, but four more were waiting that afternoon.

At around 12:40 pm, passers-by saw Souvannaraj at a quarry near Lake Trillium and contacted a searcher on the ground. He was evaluated by the doctor who cleaned him up and he was able to walk to the command post to meet his family.
