Ashley Judd revealed on Thursday that his mother, Naomi Judd, had died of a self-harm gunshot wound.
Ashley starred in Good Morning America in an interview with Diane Sawyer to talk about her mother’s death.
The actress told Sawyer that the Judds family chose to share Naomi’s cause of death in order to shed light on her mental illness.
“She used a weapon … my mother used a firearm,” Ashley told Sawyer.
“It’s very offensive information we share, but understand that we’re in a position where someone else would go if we didn’t say it,” she continued.
Ashley also said the family chose to clarify the cause of the mother’s death. This allowed her to manage the information that was released before her autopsy was published.
Naomi died on April 30th at the age of 76.
“We lost our beautiful mother to a mental illness,” her daughters said in a statement.
The Kentucky-born Grammy award-winning duo, The Judges singer, was scheduled to take office at the Country Music Hall of Fame Museum. But her daughter, Naomi, said, “She couldn’t cling to her until she was inducted into the Hall of Fame.” It’s the level of catastrophe that was happening inside her. Because the barriers to what they held her couldn’t penetrate her mind. And her lie that her illness was very convincing to her. “
