“We are trying to open up a whole new field for finding other worlds by searching for planetary candidates at X-ray wavelengths, which makes it possible to find them in other galaxies. The team looked for a decrease in X-ray brightness from the bright X-ray binary. This usually includes a black hole that draws gas from a neutron star (when a giant star collapses) or an approaching orbiting star. Matter near neutron stars and black holes is overheated and glows with X-rays.

Because the area that produces bright X-rays is small, the planets that pass in front of it block most or all of the X-rays and are easy to find. This allows exoplanets to be detected at far distances.

However, researchers have to wait a long time to see if they have discovered an extragalactic planet. Due to its large orbit, planetary candidates have not crossed in front of their binary partners for another 70 years. In other words, it can take decades to confirm the observations.

Astrophysicist Nia Imara, co-author of the University of California Santa Cruz, said in a statement, “Unfortunately, to make sure we’re looking at the planet, we’re looking at another transit. You’ll have to wait decades, “he said. “And because of the uncertainty about how long it will take to get going, we don’t know exactly when to look.”

Experts say that if a planet existed, it would have had to survive a supernova explosion that created a neutron star or a black hole. And in the future, companion stars could also explode as supernovae and re-explode the planet with very high levels of radiation.

Researchers have searched archives of both Chandra and the European Space Agency satellite XMM-Newton, which have substantial datasets of about 20 galaxies, and are candidates for more exoplanets in other galaxies. Look for. They add that another interesting research line is to search for X-ray passages in the Milky Way’s X-ray source and discover new planets nearby in anomalous environments.
