Nashville, TN (WKRN)-Nashville’s mother continues to mourn after her son was found dead in a burning van last week. Metro police say they are still active leads in this case.
“Be careful, I love you,” was the last word Amelia Griswald said to her 47-year-old son. It was a loving message that the two exchanged every day.
Griswald told News 2 that there was no day when she and her son didn’t talk. She last met him on Monday, October 11, the day before his body was discovered.
According to Metropolis, 47-year-old Dewayne Legs was found in a burning minivan parked in a parcel outside the Parkway Baptist Church around 8:45 pm on October 12. Until the flames went out when the police found the body.
“How can I take people’s children? I see it every day, there is so much violence, and I see this every day. How can I launch and kill someone else’s child? Can you? That’s not right, “Griswald said.
She believes her son was set up when he tried to buy a truck from someone.
“That’s what I believe. They launched him, robbed him and shot him, and then they took a van. They had surveillance cameras around this church and their son’s van. I brought it, “Griswald explained.
Legs is described as the affectionate father of his 22-year-old son and the grandfather of an 18-month-old boy. Looking back on the day the detective came to her house, Griswald said it was still a shock. In retrospect, she says there is one silver lining from this vicious crime.
“They took my baby to church and handed it to God, where I said it was the only good thing, and I knew that God had him. He was holding him in his arms before the truck exploded. “
Police have not released any new information regarding this case. The Legs funeral is scheduled for Saturday, October 23rd.
