Grand Island, Nebraska (AP) — A man on Grand Island who set his wife on fire before stabbing and beating his wife avoided imprisonment after being sentenced to probation.

Judge Andrew Butler sentenced 39-year-old Giannini Cervantes on Tuesday to probation of two domestic violences for 42 months.

Cervantes did not challenge the September indictment.

In exchange, the number of weapons and two charges of domestic violence were withdrawn.

Police arrested Cervantes in May, three weeks after Cervantes said he had poured alcohol on his wife’s feet and set it on fire.

According to police, he stabbed his wife in his leg. In a subsequent attack, police described Cervantes’s violent assault on his wife, leaving behind a broken rib and a deformed face.
