NYLAH BURTON, 27, I have two electric toothbrushes, not just one. At the recommendation of her dentist three years ago, a Chicago-based travel writer stopped using her manual brush. She decided to buy the Philips Sonicare DiamondClean 9500, a smart electric toothbrush, for $ 270. She was putting too much pressure on her teeth, so she noticed that the Sonicare pressure sensor helped her relax. “It stopped my gums from bleeding,” she said.
Unfortunately, Burton found it impractical to carry a charger while traveling. The solution turned out to be Quip’s second toothbrush, a consumer startup powered by replaceable AA batteries. No need for a bulky charger.
