Virginia Beach, Virginia (WAVY) — Some Virginia Beach businesses still want help recovering from a pandemic. One of the companies eligible for the grant found that they didn’t have enough money to go around.
“We opened in 2009,” said Wayne Mitnick.
Mitnick does his best job in his Virginia Beach garage and customer home.
“We go to people’s homes and businesses and repair electronics, TVs and audio equipment,” Mitnick added.
But like many small businesses, the pandemic has turned into a real-life TV drama for affordable mobile TV repairs.
“Last year was cruel,” Mitnick said. “It was terrible. I closed the business, made a hand sanitizer and handed it to first responders.”
According to Mitnick, the business is getting better, but the recovery isn’t over yet.
“A thousand years later, I wouldn’t have thought I was talking. [WAVY’s] Jason Marks mentions the fact that he doesn’t seem to be able to get a grant to help small businesses, “Mitnick added.
A few months ago, Mitnick applied for a grant from the city to help pay for three employees. The money came from the stimulus package. He was eligible to receive $ 10,000, but was told last week that he was out of money.
“It was a shock to us,” Mitnick said. “I said,’You’re kidding.'”
A United Way spokeswoman for South Hampton Road said a small business in Virginia Beach had a two-round grant. Initially helped 414 companies. So far, the second round helped 376, but another 110 was told that the money wasn’t there.
“I think it’s very important to do everything we can to move these resources to the community and the businesses that need them,” said Virginia Beach City Councilor Michael Berlucki. ..
The city council helped by pitching additional cash when the first round of $ 10,000 was running out. Michael Berlucchi says he hopes the same thing will happen in the second round.
“Hope should not be lost,” Berlucchi added. “Hope is not lost. In fact, there are many reasons to have hope.”
“I don’t need this money next year,” Mitnick said. “We don’t make this money in two months. We need this money now.”
The city council will be briefed on the project grant project on May 25th.
Berlucchi says he’s still waiting for the city to find out how to make money from the Biden Stimulation Package.
