Neighbors concerned about details as Bristol Motor Speedway presents expansion plans – Nashville-Davidson, Tennessee

Nashville, Tennessee (WKRN) —Tuesday night, Bristol Motor Speedway announced plans to improve the Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway if a contract is approved between the company and the Metro.

BMS general manager Jerry Caldwell said the historic racetrack has been devastated for decades and new football stadiums will only be built when the speedway is being refurbished. Caldwell hopes to bring the NASCAR Cup or Xfinity race to the speedway as part of the 10th Motorsport Weekend event.

“One of the important things we want people to know is that this doesn’t mean more races. Some people say this is an event that takes place there, a motorsport event. I think it means more events and the number of events will not change, “Coldwell said.

BMS is proposing a 10-year lease agreement starting with Metro and a $ 1 million annual lease agreement. But so far, the improvement has not put a price tag on the cost of the city.

“There aren’t enough details. The project has been underway for over four years with Bristol’s own approval, and the details are very scarce,” said a neighbor who was concerned.

The Vice-Chairman of the Fairground Commissioner’s Board asked a series of detailed questions at a hearing on Tuesday. Of particular concern was the lack of sound quality data readily available to neighbors.

“I live past I-65, a mile west of the racetrack, and I still listen to them regularly,” added another worried neighbor.

However, some historic racetracks have valuable memories and family history.

“Racing is more than just a sport. It’s a family problem for so many people,” said one woman.

Others said they wanted to see the old facilities refurbished to build a better charm for the city.

“And what I’m seeing today is the opportunity to invest in it to actually rebuild it,” said the neighbor.

There was a long line of opposition and support for the Fairgrounds Speedway expansion plan on Tuesday night, but in the end it was the Commission’s decision on how things would go. It’s a responsibility.

A meeting to review the proposed contract is tentatively scheduled for June 8.
