Las Vegas (KLAS) — According to the Nevada Department of Employment Training and Rehabilitation (DETR), the unemployment rate in Nevada in August was 7.7%, the highest in the country.
The unemployment rate in the three states of New Mexico, New Mexico and California was 7.6%.
Nevada’s unemployment rate hasn’t changed since July. The unemployment rate in August last year was 14.5%.
Nevada’s employment growth was the third highest in the country, with the leisure and hospitality industry adding the most jobs in a month and adding 3,900 jobs since July.
DETR Chief Economist David Schmidt said this was the first survey of employment data since the introduction of the Delta variant, where employers vaccinated workers or were COVID-19 negative after state-wide masking obligations. He said he made an effort to request an inspection.
“Overall, employment continued to recover rapidly,” Schmidt said. “Approximately 12,000 additional jobs per month are approaching the COVID recovery period limit and are recovering from the slow pace of July.”
The 7.7% unemployment rate shows that Nevada still has a “long way to go” towards a full recovery of the state’s labor market, “Schmidt said.
