Corpus Christi, Texas — The old baseball stadium at the Boys and Girls Club in Coastal Bend was a patch of fenced grass.
Thanks to a $ 50,000 grant from Major League Baseball and Scotts Lawn Care, the infield, home plate, and base are now dirty.
“Thank you. Marc Martinez, a participant in the Boys and Girls Club, said,” This is very grateful and I’m sure you’ll get used to it. “
The 16-year-old and his two younger brothers have been in clubs for over five years after school.
They are also baseball players and see new fields as a way to spread their love of American entertainment.
“They can accomplish this and hopefully we will be able to take the kids here and play in the field,” he said. “Children will be excited to come here. That’s great.”
The Field Refurbishment Program reviews applications from hundreds of organizations across the country wishing to improve their baseball stadium.
Only four grants were awarded each year, making the local Boys and Girls Club one of the winners.
“I’m really grateful to Scotts and Major League Baseball for funding this area to get it where it should be,” said Joe Guzman, chairman of the Coastal Bend Board. “The young athletes we have will really like it.”
After a ribbon cut on Wednesday’s new field, softball player Jennie Finch, who won the Olympic gold medal, answered questions and helped lead a baseball clinic for children.
She has been in the refurbishment program for three years and says she loves to come to the community to celebrate the new stadium.
“It’s all about kids coming here and knowing what people care about, and kids coming here and feeling like the big leaguers of the future in the field,” she said. ..
It’s unclear if Major League Baseball is in Martinez’s future, but he knows what the game means to him. It is a game that you can play in a place to hang out after school.
“Outside the fence, outdoors, family, personal issues, whatever it is, it doesn’t matter,” he said. You are here to have fun. It’s a good vacation. “
