Council Bluffs, Iowa (KMTV) — Together Having served the Omaha community for over 40 years, it is now diverging to Council Bluffs. It is said that this community is often overlooked.
With the freedom to choose from shopping carts, baskets, rows of food, and what your family needs, the new Together Food Pantry doesn’t feel like a food pantry.
Mike Hornacek, CEO and President of Together, said the building right next to West Broadway is actually a grocery store at some point, helping to create a more attractive environment.
“It’s designed to feel like a grocery store as much as possible,” Hornacek said.
The new pantry focuses on nutrition and connectivity and aims to extend Together’s generous arms to the often overlooked parts of the metro.
according to Data collected by United Way In 2017, more than 11.6% of people in Pottawattamie County suffered from food insecurity, 10.4% in Sarpy County and 13.8% in Douglas County.
Hornacek says that unlike Omaha, not many groups are trying to fill these inequality with Council Bluffs.
“The really big difference is actually the food insecurity system itself. There are more options for getting food in Omaha than in Council Bluffs.”
That’s why Together is developing its business to serve delicious food as well as food.
“70-75% of the food available is healthy, nutritious dairy, protein and produce,” said Hornacek.
But unlike some pantry, Hornacek says that everyone needs to bring their own-no paperwork required.
“Uncompromisingly, we believe that food is a human right, so when you go through the door and express your need for food, you won’t be turned away.”
They say they opened on Monday and saw 25-35 families stop by every day.
The pantry to dine with is located on SteB’s 3415W Broadway in Council Bluffs.
Current business hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 1 pm to 5 pm and Tuesday and Thursday from 3 pm to 7 pm.
