New Fresno police operation designed to curb violence – Fresno, California

Fresno, California 2021-08-03 20:15:08 –

Fresno, CA (KFSN)-Fresno police are increasing their numbers and moving to neighborhoods in response to the recent surge in violence.

Fresno committed 45 murders this year, surpassing last year’s 74, the highest number in years.

Therefore, police are now taking a new approach.

Gun violence killed three people in Fresno over the weekend, pushing police chief Paco Balderrama to a cliff.

The surge in violence began before he got a job, but he is now taking a new step to calm things down.

“All specialized units will focus on violent crimes. Duration,” said the chief. “It’s a top priority, reducing shooting and reducing murder, so it’s going to be a full-fledged deck approach.”

The city has had 418 shots this year, an increase of more than 100 since this time last year.

Police seized more than 1,000 weapons in 2021, according to the chief, but police still see a large number of powerful weapons on the streets.

Programs like Advance Peace have been small and successful in reducing violence from targeted groups, but the problem remains.

“It’s a tragedy mixed with turmoil, and the solution to this problem is’how to live without dying’,” said Aaron Foster of Advance Peace. “It’s a really difficult question, but I’m sure our community can find the answer. If not, we invite things to our space.”

Valderrama cites several factors driving violence, including national trends, prison revolving doors, and a shortage of police officers.

Fresno has about 22,000 gang members, and more than 700 executives can work daily, he says.

He recently doubled the gang unit and is now allocating overtime to make sure there are enough cops on the street.

“I can’t stand it anymore,” Valderrama said. “For those who are shooting, we are chasing you. For those who are creating havoc and danger in our community, we are chasing you. And We never stop. “

The chief says he has gained support from the black community for his new operation, which has no end date.

Whenever they curb violence, he says it will end.
