Greenville, South Carolina (WSPA) – New trails are being proposed in Greenville to improve connectivity.

A public meeting was held on Wednesday night, where people commented on one of the projects, the Zoo Trail.

“There are two different paths. The first one is called the Zoo Trail. We back it up to the properties of the zoo. Karin Owens, Mobility Coordinator for the City of Greenville, said:

“The other is a hiking bike trail within the Nicoltown community, which is an extension of existing mountain bikes and a natural surface trail called Sliding Rock, a hill already owned by the city. It will be built in the middle, “said Owens. ..

The zoo trail could eventually connect the main street to the Greenville Zoo.

“The zoo trail itself ran from David Francis to East Washington. This is this segment,” says Owens. “In the end, we figured out how it was expanded and connected to the main street. It’s probably part of the next phase, which will happen in the next fiscal year or the next year.”

“And connected to that part is the Connector Pathway, which is supposed to be a natural surface trail similar to what already exists on the same hillside, called Troop 19 Trails,” Owens said. I am saying. “That is, it connects to that trail network and provides a direct connection from the zoo trail to Cleveland Park.”

Some people agree with it, but many of the rooms had some concerns.

“I love this. I think this is great. My input will be full steam first. Get it done as soon as possible,” said Steve, the man at the meeting.

“We’re worried as a neighborhood. We regularly hear gunshots from Cleveland Park, but we don’t know where people are, who they are, or where they’re heading,” another man said. I did.

According to the city’s website, this trail is similar to the Swan Prabbit Trail and could be branded as a zoo trail spar with “zoo-related art and iconography.” The website also states that the long-term goal is to create a pedestrian entrance from the trail to the zoo.

A man living nearby said he was worried about security and more.

“What is the purpose? Are we going to put the lights there 24 hours a day? That’s what we’re trying to do for safety,” said the man.

“We have an existing route, so understanding this turns out to be a challenge for me,” he said. “This is trying to create something you don’t need.”

Another woman who rides a bicycle often feels different aloud.

“I ride at night. I’m riding alone, but I’ve never had a problem. I think I can hear about the problem,” the woman said.

During the meeting, Owens said the project had not yet been designed. He also said the city council had not yet approved it.

“The next step is to continue the conversation with our neighbors throughout the community. Accepting feedback via email, phone, or direct meeting will eventually be communicated to the council, who want it to move forward. You can digest and think about whether it’s a project, “says Owens.

One woman said she needed a trail as a whole.

“The higher the connectivity, the less people depend on parking,” she said.

According to Owens, the purpose of this trail is to provide connectivity in the neighborhood, connectivity to tourist destinations, and more.

Phase 1 of the zoo trail will cost $ 200,000, Owens said. He said the project would come from trail and greenway budgets.
