Fill the gap in achievement

According to the latest data available from UA, 33.5% of UA’s first full-time students started as a STEM major in 2017. After 4 years, 25.2% have not completed or have a STEM degree.

Therefore, in addition to forming strong university-level teachers in the short term, the long-term purpose of the program is to help fill some of the achievement gaps in the STEM field.

STEM-related degrees can lead to high-demand jobs, but underrated background students do not get those degrees as often as their more lucrative peers.

For example, in 2018, Hispanic students received 12% bachelor’s degree, 9% master’s degree, and 6% doctoral degree in STEM, according to a report from the Pew Research Center. That same year, less than 9% of black students earned a STEM at the bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral level.
