New York >> New York Attorney General today sued New York Police Department for rough treatment of protesters against racial injustice last spring as part of a long-standing pattern of abuse due to inadequate training, oversight and discipline. I called.

Attorney General Letitia James’s proceedings include dozens of cases of illegal activity during spring demonstrations triggered by the killing of George Floyd by police. ..

“Most of these have found the deeply concerned and illegal patterns of practice used by the New York Police Department in response to peaceful protests,” James said in a press conference announcing the proceedings.

Democrat James was tasked with investigating from Governor Andrew Cuomo whether New York Police Department police officers used excessive force to suppress and enforce the curfew of Mayor Bill de Blasio. In July, she published a preliminary report citing “a clear collapse of trust between police and the general public.”

She calls for reforms, including the appointment of a monitor to oversee NYPD police tactics in future protests and a court order declaring that the department’s policies and practices used during the protests are illegal.

The NYPD did not immediately comment on the proceedings.

The James case is the second major case stemming from the NYPD protests.

In October, the New York Civil Liberties Association and the Legal Assistance Association sued the city on behalf of protesters who claimed to have been assaulted and abused by police.

Civil rights groups and city oversight agencies have also criticized the ministry’s actions.

Human Rights Watch released its report in November, citing evidence that police planned an aggressive crackdown on protesters in the Bronx on June 4.

In December, city inspectors discovered that the NYPD had been distracted by the scale of the protests, agitating tensions and resorting to aggressive disability management methods that suppressed freedom of speech.
