Wellington, New Zealand (AP) — The New Zealand Government acknowledges that most other countries did long ago. It is no longer possible to completely remove the coronavirus.
Since the early days of the pandemic, New Zealand has pursued an unusual zero-tolerance approach to viruses through strict blockades and aggressive contact tracing.
This worked until recently, but changed in August when the outbreak of the more contagious delta variant became established.
The outbreak is still boiling, but Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has announced a cautious plan to ease the blockade restrictions from Tuesday.
She said removal strategies were important while the country did not have the vaccine.
The country reports that about half of the eligible population is fully vaccinated and 79% receive the first dose of the vaccine.
“There’s a good reason we feel optimistic about the future,” Ardan said on Monday.
Air New Zealand said It is ready to reconnect with the world. After 2022, foreign travelers will need to be fully vaccinated.
