The letter also asks for details on the driver assistance system to ensure that the driver pays attention and how to detect if the driver is engaged. NHTSA supported some automakers until November 3rd and other automakers until November 17th.

NHTSA also asked automakers to elaborate on “strategies for detecting and responding to the existence of first responders / law enforcement agencies.”

On August 31, NHTSA sent Tesla an 11-page letter containing a number of questions that had to be answered by October 22 as part of the investigation. NHTSA said there were reports of 17 injuries and one death in 12 clashes.
