Bruins will unveil Nick Ritchie in a future expansion draft of Seattle Kraken.
A list of 10 players Bruins is protecting for the Expansion Draft was released on Sunday. Patrice Bergeron, Brad Marchand, Charlie Coil, David Pastonack, Craig Smith, Jake Debrask and Trent Frederick are the seven forwards on the list. Charlie McAvoy, Brandon Carlo and Matt Grzelcyk are defenders and Jeremy Swayman is a goalkeeper.
In addition to Ritchie, three of Bruins’ young defenses (Connor Clifton, Jeremy Lauzon, and Yakub’s Boril) were not protected due to the expansion draft. Forwards Chris Wagner and Curtis Lazar also remained vulnerable.
Newcomers like goalkeeper Jeremy Swayman and unlimited free agents like Tuukka Rask, David Krejčí and Taylor Hall are exempt from the expansion draft.
Kraken can sign a pending free agent within 48 hours of the expanded draft on Wednesday. If Seattle signs a free agent in Boston, Bruins will not select a player in the expansion draft.
Bergeron, Marchan and Coil hold a no-movement clause. That is, Bruins needed to protect them unless each player gave them permission to expose.
Acquired by Bruins on the 2020 trade deadline, Ritchie scored 15 goals and 11 assists this season, playing on the left in the third line for most of the season. Ritchie will be a restricted free agent this offseason. This means that if Bruins is selected, it will not save cap space.
Ritchie is the largest name on the unprotected list, If Kraken chooses a Bruins player, It will be one of the young defenses.
Seattle can only choose one player from each draft team. Kraken must choose at least 14 forwards, 9 defenses and 3 goalkeepers.
