Nike has suspended a multi-year approval deal with Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson in complaints from multiple women...
Twenty-two women working in the health and wellness industry have accused Watson of exposing himself during last year’s massage session and instructing him to touch inappropriate areas of his body. Proceedings include allegations of sexual assault, civil assault, or intentional mental distress.
“We are deeply concerned about the disturbing allegations and have suspended Deshaun Watson,” Nike said in a statement Wednesday. “We will continue to monitor the situation carefully.”
Watson denies cheating,“The claim that Deshawn forced women to sexually act is completely wrong.”
Watson, 25, was named Texans in 2017 by signing a contract with Nike shortly before the NFL Draft. Nike does not disclose the terms and payments of Watson’s approval agreement. Watson also deals with Rolex, Beats by Dre, and Texas grocery chain HEB. Details of these commercial arrangements remain private.
Rolex, Apple’s Beats by Dre, and HEB haven’t said whether to freeze or cancel the approval deal with Watson. Both companies did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Two women reveal their identities
Of the 22 women accusing Watson, two alleged he had sexually assaulted and one accused him of deliberately causing mental distress. The rest of the women have accused him of civil assault.
Houston massage therapists Ashley Solis and Lauren Baxley, two women suing Watson, this week.
“Deshaun Watson did what I liked most at home on March 30, 2020: assaulting and harassing him with massage therapy,” Solis said in a press conference. She added, “I repeat the incident in my head as if I were waking up from a horrific nightmare. Only that nightmare is real.”
Solis has accused Watson of civil assault. It is not clear which proceeding Baxley filed, but in a letter she read at a press conference, Watson claimed to have exposed herself and touched her genitals.
Watson has a four-year, $ 160 million contract with the Texans. The team’s front office hasn’t said if they plan to release Watson, but the team’s general manager Nick Caserio has mentioned the Texans. Podcast Last month, the organization took women’s claims “very seriously.”
“The claims being discussed are certainly awkward,” said Caserio. “Organically, it’s unacceptable to us, that type of behavior. We leave it to legal proceedings.”
The NFL said it was investigating the allegations, and Houston police said it was investigating one of the alleged cases.
